Many older persons without a cooling system find
themselves in emergency situations during hot summer
days and nights. Mountain Empire Older
Citizens (MEOC) may be able to help. MEOC's
FanCare program begins on July 1 and ends on
September 30 each year. MEOC distributes a
limited number of fans and air conditioners to
eligible older persons in need during summer months.
To qualify, a person must be sixty (60) years of age
or older, have a situation at home that threatens
health and have an adjusted gross income of at or
below 150% of the federal poverty level (1 person,
$1,485; 2 persons, $2,003). All incomes of
persons in the household must be counted.
This program is sponsored by Dominion Virginia Power
and administered by the Virginia Department of Aging
and Rehabilitative Services.
