Mountain
Empire Older Citizens (MEOC) and LENOWISCO
Health District are offering a new program to
improve the health of older citizens of Wise
County/City of Norton, Lee County, and Scott County.
Workshops will be held in community locations such
as churches, senior centers, community centers,
libraries, and hospitals. Starting July 28,
2010, trained health educators and registered nurses
will offer free workshops on Chronic Disease
Self-Management, open to all area residents 60 years
of age and above. This program gives the
participant the opportunity to design a personalized
self-management program. Each participant
attending the workshop receives a copy of the book,
Living a Health Life with Chronic Conditions.

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program
You Can! Live Well,
Virginia meets once per week for six weeks
and includes instruction and discussion related to
healthy living tools such as effective
communications with family and health care
providers, medication management, personalizing a
fitness and exercise program, relaxation methods,
stress reduction, dealing with negative emotions,
managing symptoms, nutrition and healthy eating,
setting weekly goals, and effective problem-solving.
In addition to older adults, the course would be
very beneficial and is open to family members of any
age caring for an older person with a chronic
condition.
Workshops are provided at no cost to
the participant. Both morning
and afternoon classes are being planned over the
next 17 months. Participants are encouraged to
pre-register as soon as possible so educational
materials can be obtained in advance.
If you are interested in attending a workshop in
your area, please call Rachel Helton with Mountain
Empire Older Citizens at 276-523-4202.
