Mountain Empire Regional Transportation Advisory Council

MERTAC, the Mountain Empire Regional Transportation Advisory Council,  is conducting a comprehensive assessment of transportation needs in Lee, Wise and Scott Counties and the City of Norton and is developing steps to address these needs. The goal of MERTAC is to promote access to community services and to develop a definitive plan to provide transportation to all citizens of the region. MERTAC is NOT about building roads...MERTAC is about moving PEOPLE!

The LENOWISCO Planning District (Planning District 1) has never before had a formal regional effort at planning and coordination of non-construction transportation activities. A formal and structured approach to this planning and coordination will lead to the production of a written, living document to distribute at large and to have formal adoption by local officials. This will assist in broadening grassroots support, educating the public and future officials, and make definitive, measurable, and demonstrable progress toward MERTAC’s goals.

Created in March, 2006, MERTAC is funded by a Community-Based Transportation Planning grant from the Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA).
