MET team wins state transit ‘roadeo’ for sixth consecutive year

Mountain Empire Transit won the annual CTAV Virginia State Paratransit Bus Roadeo, marking its sixth consecutive championship.

The 2026 competition was held April 25 in Alexandria and brought together transit operators from across Virginia to test their skills in safety, precision and passenger care.

With this latest win, MET has now claimed the state title 11 times in the past 13 years.

“I’m proud of our team,” said MET Director Mitch Elliott. “We’ve got a great group of drivers. Safety is always the main priority, and they show that every day, not just at the roadeo.”

Drivers are evaluated through a series of events that reflect real-world performance, including a written test, pre-trip inspection, wheelchair securement, passenger assistance and a timed driving course.

MET team members also earned several individual honors:

  • Harry Crider — 2nd overall, 1st place left-hand reverse
  • Jon Lovell — 3rd overall, 1st place wheelchair securement
  • Jeff Whisman — 4th overall
  • Betty Whisman — 5th overall
  • Jerald Roberts — 2nd place, Rookie of the Year division

The roadeo recognizes excellence in safety and service and gives operators an opportunity to sharpen their skills and connect with peers from across the state.
