Proceeds from a June 17 golf tournament in Big Stone Gap will provide direct help to local cancer patients throughout the community.
The 11th Annual Harold Lester Memorial Golf Tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Lonesome Pine Country Club. Registration opens at 8 a.m. The event supports the Harold Lester Memorial Fund of MEOC’s Mountain Laurel Cancer Support and Resource Center.
The Harold Lester Memorial Fund provides direct help to cancer patients in Lee, Scott and Wise counties and the City of Norton experiencing unexpected needs due to a cancer diagnosis. Harold Lester’s family established the fund in his memory a decade ago after he lost his battle with cancer.
Mr. Lester was devoted to caring for and assisting thousands of people during his lifetime. He spent much of his life working with children and their families through his career in the Wise County School System, where he was a teacher, coach and administrator for more than three decades. He was director of secondary education at the time of his retirement.
Those who knew Mr. Lester remember a man with a strong Christian faith and a belief that one needs to take care of family, neighbors, friends and those in need. The June 17 golf tournament will help continue Mr. Lester’s legacy of giving. The Harold Lester Fund has assisted with the purchase of medications and materials for ramps to make homes accessible for cancer patients. The fund also pays rent, water bills and electric bills because people undergoing cancer treatment often cannot continue to work.
“The Harold Lester Memorial Golf Tournament is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Mountain Laurel Center,” noted Center Coordinator Tiffany Jacobs. “We are hoping for a great turnout because every cent raised will directly assist a local cancer patient. You can help in multiple ways – as a player, company sponsor or individual sponsor,” she stated. All donations are tax deductible.
