MEOC receives Aging Achievement Award for expanding telehealth access

Mountain Empire Older Citizens, Inc. has been honored with a 2025 Aging Achievement Award from USAging for its Expanding Telehealth Access for Rural Older Persons initiative, which brings broadband and telehealth access to isolated older adults in Southwest Virginia.

The award, one of the nation’s top recognitions for local aging programs, was presented during USAging’s 50th Annual Conference and Tradeshow, held July 20–23 in Chicago, Illinois. MEOC’s project was among just 26 Aging Achievement Award winners nationwide. MEOC Executive Director Michael Wampler (second from left in the photo above) and Nutrition Services Director Kristen Rutherford (second from right) accepted the award on July 20 at the conference.

Supported by Caregiving.com and Cumulus.care, the Aging Innovations & Achievement Awards spotlight creative, effective programs that improve the lives of older adults, caregivers and people with disabilities, helping them remain in their homes and communities.

Through Expanding Telehealth Access for Rural Older Persons, MEOC partnered with the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority, Wise County Industrial Development Authority, and the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services to bring Starlink broadband service and tablets to older residents who previously had no internet access. The program addresses barriers like transportation and mobility issues that often prevent rural residents from connecting with doctors and specialists.

VCEDA and American Rescue Plan Act funding covered the $322,500 program cost, providing 75 households with Starlink satellite equipment, installation and two years of service. Many participants now use the service for telehealth visits, nutrition counseling and even online wellness resources like healthy eating tips and exercise programs.

“This award is a tremendous honor for MEOC and our partners,” said MEOC Executive Director Michael Wampler. “We’ve always believed that where you live shouldn’t determine whether you can receive the care and support you need. Expanding access to telehealth through reliable broadband means older adults in even the most remote parts of our region can manage their health and stay connected to vital services.”

USAging CEO Sandy Markwood praised all 2025 award recipients, saying, “These award-winning programs exemplify the creativity, dedication and impact that define our Aging Network. They are not only improving the lives of older adults and caregivers today, but also shaping a stronger, more supportive future for aging in every community across the country.”

The Aging Innovations & Achievement Awards recognize outstanding programs in areas ranging from caregiving and nutrition to healthy aging, social engagement and technology. All winners are featured in USAging’s 2025 Awards Showcase.
